Ten Science and Math Doctoral Degrees Now Awarded from IUPUI CampusWith recent approvals from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education of doctoral programs at the School of Science, IUPUI has further strengthened its position as a leading provider of graduate education in the state of Indiana.
INDIANAPOLIS -- The decisions mean that six Purdue science and math doctoral degrees will now be awarded from the Indianapolis campus, reflecting the programs' national prominence and success in obtaining external funding. These are long existing programs that have graduated many successful students.Previously, students enrolled in these programs at IUPUI but the degrees were credited to the West Lafayette campus.
The six programs are Addiction Neuroscience, Biology, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Computer Science, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics. In total, the School of Science now offers 10 Ph.D. programs with 191 students currently enrolled. The School has awarded approximately 200 doctoral degrees.
Programs in the School of Science provide a unique nexus for scientific exchange and training that are much needed to support Indiana’s life-sciences economy.
“Approval of these Ph.D. degrees will facilitate student success,” said School of Science Dean Simon Rhodes. “It will optimize the research of doctoral students and their faculty mentors by allowing the best advisory committees. In addition, the enriched research environment will provide significant developmental opportunities for our undergraduate STEM degree students who are so needed for the Indiana economy.”
