IUPUI students, researchers begin collaboration with Cuban university to study neglected diseases

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis undergraduate students and researchers recently traveled to Cuba to conduct a workshop and begin a partnership with the University of Havana implementing IUPUI's Distributed Drug Discovery, or D3, program. The American Chemical Society and the School of Science at IUPUI funded the workshop. 

Chemical origami yields new plant compounds with therapeutic and economic potential

INDIANAPOLIS -- Many of these natural products are very useful as antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs or vitamins, among myriad other applications. Many of these compounds are far too complex to synthesize in the laboratory, but they can be purified from the plants in which they are found. 

IUPUI leading $4.8M project to increase STEM minority pipeline, impacting students statewide

INDIANAPOLIS -- The National Science Foundation awarded the grant to IUPUI as the lead institution of the Indiana STEM Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, which was formed to achieve that goal. Other alliance partners are IU Bloomington, Ball State University, IU Northwest, IU South Bend and Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis, which is the top provider of transfer students to IUPUI STEM-degree programs.

Ten Science and Math Doctoral Degrees Now Awarded from IUPUI Campus

INDIANAPOLIS -- The decisions mean that six Purdue science and math doctoral degrees will now be awarded from the Indianapolis campus, reflecting the programs' national prominence and success in obtaining external funding. These are long existing programs that have graduated many successful students.Previously, students enrolled in these programs at IUPUI but the degrees were credited to the West Lafayette campus.

School of Science welcomes new Chair of Chemistry & Chemical Biology

INDIANAPOLIS -- Before joining the IUPUI School of Science, Basu spent the last 22 years in education, research, service and administration at University of Arizona, University of Pittsburgh and, Duquesne University. Additionally, he worked with nonprofit organizations such as the Society for the Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh, in a variety of roles including serving as Chair of grants committees.

School of Science honors record number of graduates in 2016

INDIANAPOLIS — The graduating class of 2016 consists of a record 582 bachelor's degree recipients, 153 master's degree recipients and 30 doctoral degree recipients.

School of Science Dean Simon Rhodes introduced the class of 2016 with a few remarks about the impact an IUPUI education has.

David Malik appointed to key IUPUI senior leadership position

INDIANAPOLIS – Malik, who currently serves as the interim chair of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology in the School of Science and previously held the position of executive vice chancellor of academic affairs at IU Northwest, has been appointed interim associate vice chancellor for undergraduate education and dean of University College, succeeding Stephen Hundley. A national search for a permanent successor to this position will begin in the fall.
